Russia is the largest country in the world by landmass; it is eighth in population and sixth in GDP globally. The total land area of Russia is 17,075,400 sq. km. The population is 143,4 million people (est. 2013). Russia is a multinational, multi-ethnic state with over 180 nationalities and ethnicities. Russians form the largest ethnic group, accounting for more than 80% of the population.

The official language in the Russian Federation is Russian, however a large number of other languages and dialects exist.

Orthodox Christianity is the dominant religion. Islamic, Catholic, Buddhist, and other confessions are also presented.

Moscow is the capital of Russia with a population of 12 million. Cities of Saint Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, and Nizhny Novgorod also play an important role in Russian economic and social life. Administrative subdivisions of the Russian Federation include 46 regions, 21 republics, 9 territories, and 7 others.

Russia is one of the leading countries in global science and culture.

At the present time, Russia is the world’s largest producer and exporter of natural gas and the world’s second largest producer and exporter of oil.
